I commissioned Eleanor Bell to help provide technical expertise and experience to the refurbishment of Northumberland’s Kielder Skyspace in 2018. Eleanor designed, installed and programmed the new digital lighting and control system in the Skyspace, working closely with James Turrell, myself as Curator, and Kielder Art & Architecture that raised and managed the funding for the project.

Throughout the entire project period from our initial contact through to its completion and also involving her delivery of workshops with school children of all ages, Eleanor was a pleasure to work with and proved to be an experienced, hard working, practical and generous person, both in her role as electrician and also as interpreter of James Turrell’s aesthetic aspirations for the project.

I would have no hesitation in recommending her to others.

Eleanor did a fantastic job on the lighting design for our home. We tasked her with designing a modern lighting solution which would enhance the property’s period features and Eleanor came up trumps. Eleanor’s attention to detail is superb; she took the time to really understand what we wanted to achieve and has a great sense of light, space and how the various elements of the property cohered.
We really valued Eleanor’s creative vision and also her practical approach. Eleanor was great at coming up with stunning solutions which really worked. We are thrilled with the results; we have a beautiful integrated lighting system which we can control easily and effectively and which really ‘makes’ the house. We loved working with Eleanor; she is fun, thoughtful and relaxed and we would recommend her without hesitation!

As a self-taught property developer I was extremely sceptical about the necessity or usefulness of a specialist lighting designer, and even more doubtful about their cost effectiveness. So it was with some trepidation that I engaged Eleanor Bell on a unique project we have underway to build an office on a disused World War II concrete barge. What a pleasant surprise! Eleanor has more than proved her effectiveness: her input has been crucial to the look and fabric of the project, and will more than justify specialist lighting input for even a small project.

So much so that when we were trying to bring an extra level of quality to a warehouse conversion I had no hesitation in engaging Eleanor. Her extra depth of product knowledge, and visualisation of finished result, together with a working knowledge of installation procedure, means I would recommend her services to anyone wanting to ensure the lighting of a development is both aesthetically pleasing and practically effective.

Eleanor was the Lighting Designer for a commercial retrofit that I managed. Her attention to the brief was reflected in the standard of the lighting specification. Changes were resolved rapidly and adventures were taken with some hand made installations. The centrepiece of the building was a handmade design of Eleanor’s which pushed the sustainability of the building to even greater heights.

Eleanor worked for several weeks at my house in 2010 completing a full rewire, a project she undertook with real dedication and obvious attention to detail. She was meticulous in her work and if problems arose seemed to consider alternative options with logic and care. She was a pleasure to have working in my home, and so in my current property I didn’t hesitate to contact her when new lighting needed designing and installing.

I first met Eleanor when she came to speak at a Women’s Institute meeting about her interest in sculpture with light that lead to her obtaining an electrical qualification. Several months later, when looking at a very dark area of our hallway I remembered the talk and contacted Eleanor to install a light display on the wall.

After saying ‘by the way can you do something with the lights in the lounge …’ this led to us getting a full electrical check of the house so that we are now fully certified. The work carried out involved crawling in loft spaces, down the inspection pit in the garage as well as the more normal places where cables can be found. As a consequence we have more effective and economical lighting throughout the house as well as the security in knowing ‘anomalies’ in the older wiring have been corrected. We found Eleanor to be extremely proficient, explaining what she was doing or had found and consequently exceeding our expectations.
