Firstly, there are two key questions: what are your design requirements, and what could a creative lighting scheme bring to your project? An initial meeting will answer these questions. A meeting onsite is ideal to gain the best understanding of your space, but this can also be done by phone if needed. Once your requirements have been discussed, you will receive a fee proposal confirming your brief. After you've accepted this, I will start the concept design process. This will include sketches of proposed layouts, exploring the best ways to light your project. It will also incorporate preliminary placement plans and samples of possible light fixtures, and a costing outline. At the completion of the concept design, I will present the sketches and samples to you for discussion. Communication is vital throughout the project, from the brief to the final commissioning.
Once you're happy with the basic concepts, the second stage of the project begins. I will then start work on developing the design, working in co-ordination with the other contractors involved in your project. The development stage focuses on the practical aspects of the lighting scheme. During this, I will create 3D renders to show the lighting levels, and how the fittings will integrate with your space. These visualisations are designed to help you envisage how effective the scheme will be. You'll also receive a draft layout, indicating where the fixtures and controls will be located, and an estimated product costing. You will then have the opportunity to discuss the designs as before, making any necessary changes before the plans for the scheme are finalised.
This is the last stage of the design process, where the details of your lighting scheme are finalised.
At this point, I will produce a detailed specification for the project. This will include marked up plans which show the exact locations of fixtures, controls and switches, and technical information such as circuit diagrams and driver details. The specification will also incorporate detailed pricing for the fixtures and fittings that will be used. Depending on the fittings you have chosen, I can supply them or, alternatively, they can be sourced by your contractors.
In the last design meetings, you can discuss the specifications, and request any final amendments to the plans. They will then be signed off, and passed on to the contractors.
During the installation works, I will conduct site inspections to ensure the designs are being implemented according to the specifications. Once the works are complete, I will undertake the final commissioning. This may include overseeing the focusing of fittings and the programming of any control systems within the scheme. Most importantly, I will confirm that the installation has been completed in keeping with the design and that you're satisfied with the final product. Once the project is completed, you will have a completely bespoke lighting scheme, tailored to you and your space.
